Editor’s note: Traditional teaching has suggested that the presence of bladder stones should be considered as an absolute indication for the surgical management of underlying benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) to prevent new stone formation. This practice was challenged in a study published in 2004 (BJU Int 2004;93:1267–70), in which the urodynamic findings before and after management of bladder stones demonstrated that only half of the patients who presented with bladder stones had urodynamic evidence of bladder outlet obstruction. The current, prospective, non-randomized study compared the clinical outcomes between patients who underwent transurethral stone removal and transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) with those who underwent transurethral stone removal and were treated medically for BPH thereafter.
