Editor’s note: Diarrhoea is a common problem in cats and dogs that are housed in animal shelters, and can delay or prevent rehoming, restrict shelter resources, and even lead to euthanasia of an affected animal. Probiotics have been proposed to be useful in the management of diarrhoea. It is thought that they may either work by preventing colonisation of the gut by pathogenic species or by stimulating the host’s immune system.
