Editor’s note: Mast cell tumours are the most common skin tumour of dogs, and are generally treated by excisional surgery. It has been suggested that there is likely to be a higher risk of wound breakdown following mast cell tumour removal than there is in other skin wounds, owing to the actions of histamine from the neoplastic cells. Although some experimental studies have provided support for this suggestion, the hypothesis has not yet been tested in clinical studies in man or animals.
