3g mesalazine granules are superior to 9mg budesonide for achieving remission in active ulcerative colitis: a double-blind, double-dummy, randomised trial

Gross V, Bunganic I, Belousova EA et al.; International BUC-57 Study Group.
J Crohns Colitis 2011;5:129–38.

In the present 8-week, 48-center, randomized controlled trial in patients with mild-to-moderately active ulcerative colitis, oral budesonide was compared with mesalazine for the induction of clinical remission. Treatment with mesalazine was demonstrated to be superior to budesonide treatment in terms of clinical remission as well as clinical and endoscopic activity indices; however, a clinical, endoscopic, and histological response was observed in the budesonide treatment arm as well.
