Gut 2011;60:923–9.

The modulation of gut microbiota using prebiotics as a therapeutic approach in Crohn’s disease is an important area of investigation; however, well-conducted and sufficiently powered studies are not available. This was the first randomized controlled trial of the use of the prebiotic, fructo-oligosaccharide (FOS), in active Crohn’s disease. After 4 weeks, there was no clinical benefit observed in patients with moderate Crohn’s disease treated with FOS.
