Thromboembolic risk among Danish children and adults with inflammatory bowel diseases: a population-based nationwide study

Kappelman MD, Horvath-Puho E, Sandler RS et al.
Gut 2011;60:937–43.

Kappelman et al. performed this large, population-based study of the Danish population in order to compare the rates of venous thromboembolism (VTE) and pulmonary embolism in patients with IBD (approximately 50 000 patients) with those in a control non-IBD population (approximately 477 000 controls). The risk of VTE in IBD cases was double that in the non-IBD controls, and the relative risk was highest in IBD patients of a younger age (≤20 years).
