Di Sabatino A, Corazza GR. Lancet 2009;373:1480–93.

Di Sabatino and Corazza present an overview of the clinical and diagnostic features of celiac disease in this article. They also provide an up-to-date analysis of the disease pathogenesis and treatment options.

In this review, the authors present a detailed update on celiac disease. This disease is a life-long disorder of the gastrointestinal tract in which there is enhanced small intestinal permeability in genetically susceptible individuals. Celiac disease occurs in both adults and children at rates approaching 1% in Western populations; however, it is thought to be rare in central Africa and East Asia. The disease results from the interactions between gluten and immune, genetic, and environmental factors.
