TREATMENT AND CLINICAL PRACTICE

Cullen G, Keegan D, Mulcahy HE et al. Clin Gastroenterol Hepatol 2009;7:323–8.

This present article describes the experience of 102 consecutive patients with Crohn’s disease diagnosed in 2000–2002 who were treated according to international guidelines and followed for 5 years at one hospital in Ireland. Of 72 patients with moderate-to-severe disease at study onset, 66 were in remission at the end of the study; this indicates that a good outcome can be achieved through adherence to treatment guidelines.

What is the outcome for patients presenting with Crohn’s disease at a hospital-based practice? This article describes the experience of 102 consecutive patients with Crohn’s disease diagnosed between 2000 and 2002 at St Vincent’s Hospital in Dublin, Ireland. The severity of disease was assessed using the Harvey Bradshaw Index (HBI) and classified according to the Montreal system. Treatment was mainly administered in accordance with guidelines from the American Gastroenterology Association (AGA) and the European Crohn’s and Colitis Organization (ECCO), and included 5-aminosalicylates as initial treatment for colonic Crohn’s disease. Follow-up was for a median of 5 years. Patient details were entered on a computer database and updated with each clinic visit or in-hospital stay, and medical records were reviewed at the end of the study period.
