Report from the United European Gastroenterology Week/World Congress of Gastroenterology (Gastro 2009)

This year, the annual United European Gastroenterology Week (UEGW) was a joint congress of four organizations: the United European Gastroenterology Federation, the World Gastroenterology Organization, the World Organization of Digestive Endoscopy (OMED), and the British Society of Gastroenterology. The meeting was held from November 21–25, 2009, in London, UK. A record number of 4071 abstract were submitted, representing an increase of 30% over last year’s UEGW in Vienna, Austria. Of the 2664 abstracts accepted, 484 were delivered as oral presentations.

  In addition to NOD2 mutations, recent genome-wide association studies have highlighted mutations in ATG16L1 and IRGM as being associated with Crohn’s disease risk. Given the intracellular location of NOD2 and the role of ATG16L1 and IRGM in autophagy, the presence of pathogenic invasive bacteria could be the link between innate immune response to these invasive bacteria and the development of inflammation.

  Assessment of disease activity in IBD has classically relied upon indices of clinical symptoms, including the Crohn’s Disease Activity Index and Mayo Index scoring systems. While improving quality of life in patients with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis remains a primary therapeutic goal, apparent symptomatic control of disease activity does not predict prevention of future symptoms and complications.
