Noninvasive Imaging in
Crohn’s Disease Assessment

Emma Calabrese, MD, PhD, and Francesco Pallone, MD

Currently, the incidence of IBD is increasing worldwide, especially in Northern Europe and North America. The diagnosis of IBD with its two main sub-forms, Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis (UC), is based on clinical, endoscopic, radiological, and histological criteria. The main innovations in diagnostic technologies include the development of more sophisticated endoscopic and noninvasive imaging techniques with the aim of improving the identification of complications. Noninvasive tests for the diagnosis and follow-up of IBD have gained increasing attention. Rapid and inexpensive noninvasive tests that are sensitive, specific, and simple to perform and evaluate are necessary to prevent patient discomfort, delays in diagnosis, and unnecessary costs. These newer modalities, which are rapidly changing IBD diagnostic and management algorithms, are described in this review.
