In this survey study, Australian gastroenterologists were questioned regarding the screening of their IBD patients for infections prior to planned treatments. Their use of vaccination in IBD patients was also surveyed.

Patients with IBD treated with immunosuppressive medications have an increased risk of infections. Screening for latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) and hepatitis B in patients planned for treatment with tumor necrosis factor (TNF) inhibitors is recognized as being important. Vaccination is another strategy that aims to reduce infections in this group of patients. The present study aimed to survey the current practice of gastroenterologists in Australia and assess if it differs from published guidelines.
