The C-C chemokine receptor CCR5 binds chemo-attractants that guide the migration of pro-inflammatory monocytes/macrophages and T cells to the joint. Interrupting this pathway might be a promising treatment strategy in patients with autoimmune arthritis.

Chemokines are essential factors in the trafficking of leukocytes. Treatment with a CCR5 antagonist ameliorates collagen-induced arthritis in rhesus monkeys [1]. The present study investigated the clinical effects and safety of SCH351125, an oral, small-molecule antagonist of the CCR5 receptor, in patients with active rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
