There is evidence of an elevated cardiovascular (CV) risk in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients; however, strategies to reduce this risk are scarce. This was a longitudinal study investigating CV risk in RA patients under different treatment regimens.
Tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) has been detected in cells associated with coronary atherosclerotic plaques, and inflammatory mediators appear to contribute to cardiovascular risk. The objective of this study was to investigate the incidence of CV events among rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients treated with TNF-α antagonists, methotrexate, other non-biological disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs), and prednisone.
