Prognosis and Assessment

Nüesch E, Dieppe P, Reichenbach S et al. BMJ 2011;342:d1165.

All-cause mortality is increased in individuals with osteoarthritis of the knee and hip, and much of this additional mortality may be attributable to comorbidities.

While many studies have demonstrated an increased mortality associated with inflammatory arthritides, there are fewer data available on any increase in mortality that may be associated with osteoarthritis (OA). This study was designed to identify mortality rates in patients with OA drawn from general practices in Southwest England. The study cohort included 1163 patients aged ≥35 years old, who were followed for a median of 14 years.
