The present authors discuss the basic principles governing the use of each of five classes of antifungal agents, offering an insight into the challenges that are currently faced by clinicians treating fungal infections. Furthermore, they highlight some priorities for the development of novel antifungal agents and for future research.

 

Despite the widespread availability of several classes of antifungal agents, there are still unmet needs in the medical therapy of fungal infections. In this review, the authors evaluate the current status of the antifungal armamentarium.
