  Fungal endocarditis (FE) is an uncommon infection that is associated with substantial morbidity and mortality.   The current understanding of the fungal biofilm is that it is a complex community of microorganisms capable of surviving and thriving in a multitude of environments. Its ability to adhere and colonize on a number of different substrates including biomaterials and implantable devices can impact healthcare delivery. The tenacity of these microbial complexes does not lend itself to eradication by traditional pharmacological therapies.

  Recently, fundamental taxonomic changes have been proposed in Scedosporium and its sexual phase Pseudallescheria. The most common currently accepted taxa, P apiosperma and P boydii, are molecular siblings distinguished by tubulin and calmodulin genes, but with limited morphological and physiological discriminative parameters. In regions with temperate climates, these two species represent, together with S prolificans, the most prevalent agents in human infections.
