This prospective study was undertaken to determine the risk factors for fluconazole-resistant candidemia by isolation of fluconazole-resistant Candida spp. in patients with candidemia. Of 226 candidemia episodes, 30 (13.3%) were caused by fluconazole-resistant isolates. Chronic renal disease, neutropenia, and exposure to fluconazole were associated with a significant risk of resistanceto fluconazole.
There has been a recent increase in the incidence of candidemia caused by non-albicansCandida spp. that are more likely to be resistant to fluconazole. Identification of risk factors for fluconazole-resistant candidemia would help in optimizing the appropriate use of empirical therapy in suspected cases.
