  Since its identification as a coreceptor for viral entry into CD4+ cells, CCR5 has represented a possible therapeutic target in the battle against HIV-1. In the current article, the physiological function of CCR5, its use by HIV-1 to enter target cells, and its role in immune activation and susceptibility to disease are summarized.

  Almost 25 years have passed since the discovery of HIV and AIDS, and >25 antiviral drugs from various therapeutic classes are available at present. Despite these developments and the numerous educational campaigns that have been initiated worldwide, the numbers of HIV-infected patients in developing and industrialized countries are still increasing.
