Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide [1]. Based on several population studies, it has been projected that glaucoma will affect approximately 79.6 million people by 2020 [2]. Slightly more than one-quarter of these (26%) will have angle-closure glaucoma (ACG), accounting for 47% of the bilateral blindness related to glaucoma. As a result of its higher visual morbidity, the 5.3 million people who will be blinded by ACG is nearly equal to the number who will be blinded by open-angle glaucoma (OAG), despite the latter disease being three times more prevalent.
